How to Dress Well in Fall Without Wearing a Jacket

You don’t need to wear a jacket in the fall, especially early on.
Wearing a jacket is like an unwritten rule when the weather gets cooler. It’s 60°F outside. Go grab your jacket.
But some people just don’t like wearing a jacket, and I get it.
Jackets can be uncomfortable. They can restrict your arm movement, bunch up at the elbow, hang unevenly, or slide backward.
And have you ever tried wearing a backpack or crossbody bag over a jacket? If so, you know the struggle.
So yeah, there are plenty of good reasons why many people dislike wearing jackets. Yet when the temperature drops, it can feel like wearing a jacket is part of the cold-weather dress code.
If you’re one of those people who hates jackets, this guide is for you.
In this guide, I’ll show you what to wear instead, how to pair those alternatives with the right pants and shoes, and give you real-life outfit ideas you can copy.
Let’s get into it.
Find the Right Tops
It’s obvious that you need something comfortable, practical, and most importantly, warm to replace the jacket, but what should you wear instead?
Here are some great options.
1. Crewneck Sweaters
A crewneck sweater is one of the easiest ways to dress for fall. It’s simple, warm, and pairs well with jeans, chinos, and wool trousers.
But there are plenty of crewneck sweaters in different weights, fits, and fabrics, and some work better than others when you dress without a jacket.
The most versatile ones are mid-weight cotton or wool sweaters. Merino wool is an excellent choice. It’s warm, less bulky, and layers beautifully over T-shirts and shirts.
2. Half-Zips
Half-zips were originally sportswear.
Now they’re a regular part of smart-casual and business-casual wardrobes.
Wear a white tee or an Oxford underneath and pair the half-zip with jeans or chinos, and you get a relaxed yet polished outfit.
3. Cardigans
Cardigans are another great alternative to jackets. Wear them over T-shirts or button-downs without the weight and structure of a tailored jacket.
The key, however, is to find the right fit.
A slim cardigan can look too much like a waistcoat (vest), while an oversized one can make your outfit look sloppy.
So, look for one that fits comfortably over a shirt without being too tight or too loose. A medium-weight knit is a good starting point.
4. Button-Down Shirts
This might be the best option for early fall.
When the weather is still mild, you don’t need a sweater just yet. A button-down shirt works perfectly.
Oxford shirts, casual dress shirts, or chambray shirts are all excellent choices.
These shirts pair easily with different types of pants and won’t trap too much heat.
And if you want to add some visual interest, go with striped or plaid patterns instead of solid white or blue.
5. Knitted Polo
Another great early fall option is a knitted polo.
Knitted polos look a bit more refined than regular polo shirts, and work especially well with tailored trousers and loafers.
Just make sure to choose a knit with enough substance for the season, such as heavier textured cotton, fine-gauge merino wool, or cashmere, to look neat and warm.
Pay More Attention to Your Trousers
Without a jacket, your pants play an even more substantial role in your outfit.
For example, wool trousers can make your simple crewneck sweater look more polished, while a pair of jeans can keep your dress shirt from looking too formal.
You don’t need something unusual. You just need to find the right fit, proportion, and material.
1. Dark Wash Jeans
This is my go-to option for a fall outfit.
Jeans are a wardrobe workhorse, and a dark wash makes them even more versatile and fall-appropriate.
I pair them with a crewneck sweater or cardigan for a casual or smart-casual look, or with an Oxford shirt for a business-casual outfit.
My go-to is a straight fit. If you want your jeans to look a little smarter, go for a gentle taper.
2. Chinos
Chinos are versatile enough to pair well with different types of tops and shoes.
I have four pairs in my wardrobe: two beige, one olive, and one navy.
I wear my beige ones mostly to the office paired with loafers, and the other two on casual weekends with minimal sneakers.
That’s how I tend to wear mine, but chinos aren’t automatically dressier than jeans. Their color, fit, and what you pair them with all affect how formal they look.
3. Wool Trousers
If your top is more casual, say a crewneck sweater or a half-zip, but you still want your outfit to look polished, wool trousers will do the job.
The biggest difference between wool trousers and chinos or jeans is that wool trousers bring structure to the outfit, much like a blazer does. That contrast works particularly well when you’re dressing without a jacket.
My go-tos are navy, charcoal, or mid-gray wool trousers in a regular fit.
4. Corduroy Pants
I feel like a lot of people are sleeping on corduroy right now.
Corduroy, in my opinion, is one of the best fall fabrics, alongside suede. Both are great at bringing texture into an outfit.
That texture matters even more when you’re not wearing a jacket, since you have fewer layers to add visual interest.
The most versatile corduroy pants have a straight or tapered fit and a medium wale (8–10 ribs per inch). As for colors, neutral earth tones like dark brown, tan, olive, or navy are the best.
Choose the Right Shoes
Finally, let’s talk about shoes.
Shoes can change the direction of an outfit more than you might expect. The same sweater and pants outfit can be casual or smart depending on what’s on your feet.
For autumn, leather and suede are particularly good choices, especially when you’re not wearing a jacket, because they can bring structure, texture, and a bit of visual weight to the outfit, which keeps a simple outfit from looking too plain.
Here are some great shoes to wear with a jacket-free fall outfit.
1. Loafers
You probably saw this coming, and yes, loafers are undoubtedly some of the best shoes for men.
They are versatile enough to work well with different outfits and settings, and you can wear them across multiple seasons.
For fall, brown suede loafers are an excellent choice. Whether you wear them with wool trousers and a crewneck sweater, or pair them with chinos and an Oxford shirt, they’ll work perfectly.
But of course, that’s my personal preference. Leather and suede loafers in different colors and styles (tassel, bit) also work depending on when you wear them and what you pair them with.
2. Derby Shoes
Derby shoes are a bit more formal than loafers, especially the black leather styles with a plain or cap toe.
I own a pair of Allen Edmonds Leeds Derbies, and I wear them when I want to dress up a little, pairing them with wool trousers and a fine-gauge sweater.
You can absolutely wear them with other pants as well, such as dark wash jeans, when you want to land somewhere between casual and formal.
3. Boots
Boots and fall are a match made in heaven.
Think Chelsea boots, chukka boots, or other lace-up boots.
The great thing about boots is that they are more forgiving and work well with a wide range of pants, from jeans and corduroy pants to chinos and wool trousers.
Just choose the right boots for the right outfit: sleek boots work well with tailored clothing, while chunkier boots suit more casual outfits.
For example, a sleek Chelsea boot can dress up dark jeans, while a chunky lace-up boot feels more at home with corduroy pants and a sweater.
4. Minimalist Leather Sneakers
I specifically mentioned “minimalist” and “leather” because these are the best sneakers to wear with an outfit that doesn’t include a jacket.
Can canvas sneakers work?
Well, yes, for some occasions, say a casual outfit with jeans, but not for a smart-casual look with chinos.
Minimalist leather sneakers, on the other hand, work perfectly for both. They can even be paired with wool trousers if they’re sleek and minimal enough.
If you want to get the most versatility out of a pair, look for a sleek silhouette with little-to-no branding in white, black, or brown.
Eight Fall Outfits without a Jacket
Now let’s get into the juicy part—the real-life jacket-free outfit ideas.
Outfit 1: Oatmeal Sweater + Dark Wash Jeans + Dark Brown Suede Loafers
The first outfit is a simple and reliable everyday outfit built around classic fall colors.
The oatmeal sweater contrasts with dark denim, while the brown suede loafers add texture and refinement.
As for the silhouette, go with a medium-weight sweater and keep the jeans straight or gently tapered.
Outfit 2: Olive Crewneck Sweater + Ecru Chinos + Brown Loafers
While this is quite similar to the first outfit, with just the sweater color and pants changed, the overall vibe is quite different.
If you want to keep it as casual as the first outfit, wear a plain white tee underneath the sweater and pair it with relaxed chinos and suede loafers.
However, if you want to make it more office-appropriate, wear a button-down shirt underneath the sweater, and go with classic-fit chinos and leather loafers.
Outfit 3: Gray Half-Zip Sweater + Navy Wool Trousers + Black Leather Chelsea Boots
This is one of the easiest ways to dress up without wearing a blazer.
A gray half-zip and navy wool trousers give you a clean, understated outfit combo, while black Chelsea boots make it work for business-casual offices, dinners, or occasions when jeans feel too casual.
Underneath the sweater, I’d go with a white or pale blue Oxford to keep the outfit refined.
Some people even wear a tie with it, though I prefer going tie-free with the top two buttons open.
Outfit 4: Blue and white striped Oxford shirt + Charcoal Wool Trousers + Black Leather Derbies
This is a great early fall business casual outfit.
A striped Oxford shirt adds more visual interest than a solid white or blue one.
Pair it with charcoal trousers and black derbies, and you have a polished office look.
It’s an excellent option for milder fall days when you don’t need a second layer to stay warm.
Outfit 5: Burgundy Knitted Polo + Brown Trousers + Oxblood Tassel Loafers
This is my go-to date night outfit.
Knitted polos are refined without feeling too formal, while wool trousers keep everything polished.
Sure, you could wear penny loafers here, but I choose tassel loafers to break away from the usual business casual vibe.
Outfit 6: Chocolate Brown Sweater + Cream Corduroy Pants + Suede Chukka Boots
If you prefer warmer colors, try a chocolate brown sweater with cream corduroy pants and brown suede boots.
The brown contrasts with the cream and gives the outfit definition, while the suede brings texture.
For this outfit, I’d go with a slightly heavier sweater. For the corduroy pants, a straight or gently tapered fit works best.
Outfit 7: Oxford Shirt Under a Crewneck + Dark Jeans + Leather Chelsea Boots
This combo works well on cooler days when you want to layer without a jacket.
Start with a white or pale blue Oxford, under a mid-weight crewneck sweater in navy, olive, or burgundy. Finish with straight-leg dark jeans and a pair of sleek black leather Chelsea boots.
Just make sure your sweater isn’t too tight around the shirt, or the extra layer can make it look and feel restrictive.
Outfit 8: Burgundy Cardigan + Gray Chinos + White Minimalist Leather Sneakers
The last one is another classic combo.
The burgundy cardigan creates a nice contrast with the gray chinos, while the white leather sneakers keep the outfit looking fresh and relaxed.
Underneath the cardigan, wear a white tee if you want a more casual look or a white button-down if you want to make the outfit more office-appropriate.
